The last public senior high to open in Bismarck was Century High School in 1975.
After the bond was passed in 2012, LHS began with only a freshmen class in 2013-2014, which was made up of 8th graders at Simle from the previous year. The freshmen were at a temporary location at the Career Academy.
For the 2014-2015 school year LHS was made up of freshman and sophomores and classes were held at the Hughes Building, which is the central administration for BPS. Students also attended classes in the 8 portable buildings located in the parking lot of Hughes.
The new building opened its doors to students in August 2015 welcoming freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The building was partially under construction for the 2015-2016 school year.
For the 2016-2017 school year LHS for the first time had a class of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors with just over 1,100 students attending.
In 2017, Legacy High School had its first graduating class.
The Legacy Sabers school colors are Vegas gold, white, and black.
